John Thomas Peele (1822-1897) was a British painter specializing in portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. He was born in Peterborough, England in1822 and, as a child, he emigrated to the United States with his parents. In 1846 he opened a gallery in New York City but in 1851 returned to England. and subsequently lived on the Isle of Man from 1858 to 1865. He was active in the Society of British Artists to which he was elected in 1872 and his career flourished during the last decades of his life when prominent figures such as Prince Albert, and the American landscape painter Frederick Edwin Church purchased several of his paintings He died in 1897.
